If you have driven Gessner Road or the Katy Freeway frontage this year, you have probably noticed the pattern without naming it. New signage north of I-10. Construction fences at Gateway Memorial City coming down, then going back up around a different tenant. A rebrand at a spot you thought had just opened.
Here is the short version of what is happening. Memorial's restaurant center of gravity is not sitting inside Gateway Memorial City the way it did five years ago. The independent openings worth planning a Tuesday night around are stacking on the north side of I-10 along Gessner, while the Gateway side regroups around a smaller number of much larger destination concepts. This post walks the corridor building by building so you know what is open now, what is coming, and where the reservations are going to be hardest to get through the fall.
The Gessner strip north of I-10 has quietly become the independent-operator block
The address to know is 1016 Gessner. Two locally owned concepts from the same ownership group now share the site, giving Memorial a dual-restaurant compound that did not exist a year ago.
The Burger Joint opened at 1016 Gessner on Thursday, February 26, just north of Memorial City Mall, as the concept's fourth location. The building runs 4,300 square feet with a 1,500-square-foot patio, and it was designed by Burger Joint owners Shawn Bermudez and chef Matthew Pak with support from Cisneros Design Architects. The menu is the same one Heights and Montrose regulars already know: classic American burgers, fries, and shakes with signatures such as the Smoke Stack topped with pulled pork, mac and cheese, and a fried egg, the Kimchi with kimchi, fried egg, and cheddar, and a Vietnamese coffee shake.
Three months later the same team opened a second concept next door. The Taco Stand opened its new location near Memorial City Mall on Thursday, May 21, next to the Spring Branch location of The Burger Joint at 1016 Gessner Road, occupying 2,000 square feet with a 600-square-foot patio. This is the piece most residents miss: it runs on a schedule the mall-side sit-downs cannot match. The Taco Stand is open from 6 am until midnight on weekdays and 24 hours a day on weekends.
If you have kids in Spring Branch ISD, an early practice, or a late flight out of Hobby, a walkable pair of local-owned counters that covers breakfast through 2 a.m. is genuinely new inventory for this stretch of Memorial. Nothing at Gateway keeps those hours.
Gateway Memorial City is regrouping around bigger, splashier anchors
The other half of the story is what has changed on the south side of I-10. Gateway lost a longtime family draw this spring and picked up a very different kind of tenant almost immediately.
State Fare Kitchen & Bar at Gateway Memorial City shuttered after service on Sunday, May 31, its owner Culinary Khancepts announced. Originally opened in May 2016 by Cherry Pie Hospitality, State Fare quickly established a reputation as a family-friendly restaurant with a wide-ranging menu of Texas-inspired dishes such as chicken fried steak, burgers, chili, and seafood, and over time added over-the-top elements such as expansive brunch boards and cocktail flights. Culinary Khancepts has plans to evolve the concept in a 15,000-square-foot new location, redeveloping State Fare as a social dining destination with a more relevant menu and games for people to play before or after their meals.
Ten days earlier, the largest single restaurant to open in Memorial in years cut the ribbon in a different Gateway address. Memorial City's new Texas-inspired restaurant has set its opening date: Haywire will debut on May 20. Part of FB Society, the Dallas-based restaurant group behind Whiskey Cake and Sixty Vines, Haywire has transformed the former Vallone's space at Gateway Memorial City into a massive, two-story, 20,000-square-foot restaurant and bar that includes both an outdoor patio and the Party Barn, a 2,000-square-foot event space that will seat up to 100 people. For scale, that is roughly five times the footprint of The Burger Joint across the freeway.
And Haywire is not landing alone. Both Austin-based pizzeria Via 313 and luxury tavern Bar Bludorn have recently opened in the neighborhood, and in the weeks and months to come both a second location of Montrose barbecue favorite The Pit Room and Credence, a luxurious steakhouse from Goode Co. Restaurants president Levi Goode, will open near Haywire.
Read that lineup as a group and the strategy becomes obvious. Gateway is no longer trying to be a broad-menu family-restaurant row. It is being rebuilt around fewer, larger, higher-check destinations that pull from the whole west side of Houston rather than just the surrounding zip codes.
The Katy Freeway frontage is filling in with fast-casual
The third corridor to watch is the Katy Freeway itself, where a Houston operator with deep local roots is planting a flag.
A casual, Houston-based Mediterranean restaurant is coming to Memorial: Zoa Eateries will open a new location this summer at 9807 Katy Fwy. Opened in 2020 as Zoa Moroccan Kitchen, chef-owner Youssef Nafaa has rebranded the concept, and the fast-casual restaurant will roll out a new menu with simplified sandwich offerings, more grab-and-go options, and new breakfast items. The family credentials are worth pausing on. Nafaa is the owner of concepts including Mia Bella Trattoria, Coco Crepes & Coffee, and Mi Luna Tapas Restaurant & Bar, and is working with his sons Zack, Omar, and Adam, the brand's namesakes, on the restaurant. Adam Nafaa grew up in the area and attended Spring Branch ISD schools, including Memorial High School.
The restaurant is approximately 1,800 square feet and will offer indoor seating for 42 along with an outdoor patio, open daily from 8 am until 10 pm. A breakfast-through-dinner Mediterranean counter on the Katy Freeway is a category Memorial did not really have before this summer.

What the shift means if you already live here
A few practical takeaways for the way you actually use this neighborhood.
Late nights got easier on the north side. Between The Taco Stand's 6 am to midnight weekday and 24-hour weekend window and The Burger Joint next door, the Gessner block is now the most flexible dining stop in Memorial for anyone whose schedule does not end at 9 p.m.
Reservations at Gateway are about to get harder, not easier. When a 20,000-square-foot Haywire, a second Pit Room, and a Goode-family steakhouse all cluster on the same block, weekend Gateway parking behavior changes. If you have been treating Gateway as a walk-in option, plan to shift to weeknights or to book ahead through the fall.
Watch the State Fare reboot. A 15,000-square-foot social dining destination with games is a very different tenant type than the family sit-down it replaces, and the details are not public yet. Whatever lands there will reset the vibe of the whole Gateway courtyard.
Two of these openings have real Memorial-family stories underneath them.
